Minium lead – is a crystalline heavy powder obtained by thermal oxidation of the platelet semi-finished product made of lead.
Lead minium – a pigment orange or orange-red color, consisting of ortoplyumbata lead (Pb 3 O 4 ) and lead monoxide (PbO), containing no impurities and having a high density.
The chemical formula of red lead : Pb 3 O 4 + PbO
Red lead paint is a suspension of red lead and anticorrosive fillers in phenol-alkyd varnish with the addition of dryers and solvents.
The lead minium is intended for painting the metal surfaces of vessels of an unlimited navigation area, as well as other transport and stationary metal structures exposed to weathering.
Red lead lead is used as a very high-quality orange pigment and primer, and is also used as a filler for rubber products and plastics.
Red lead lead is a strong oxidizing agent, and this is due to the high anticorrosive properties of paints based on it: reacting with iron, it oxidizes it to obtain a dense film of black iron oxide (II), insoluble in water and not allowing oxygen from the air. The steel structures covered with red lead do not rust even in sea water, but in most countries the production of lead red lead paints is severely limited due to its toxicity.
Lead minium is high in volume. in glassmaking (crystal, optical glass, radiation resistant and protective glass).
It has a definite value as a desiccant, a catalyst, a component of “lead putty”.
Small in volume, but a very important sector of lead red lead use is its use for protection against gamma radiation and for the production of other lead compounds: dioxide, carbonate, acetate, and so on. Minor but important red lead has in the production of thermite explosives.
Minium lead also in the form of PbO (sometimes Pb 3 O 4) is one of the main reagents of the assay, collecting noble metals from the melt of the ore charge. The degree of solubility of gold and silver in lead, resulting from the assay melting, is unlimited.
Depending on the purpose, lead red lead is produced in the following grades:
M-1, M-2, M-3 – for anti-corrosive paints and varnishes;
M-4 – for batteries and production of ordinary optical glasses;
M-5 – for technical glasses, crystal and electroceramics;
M-6 – for general-purpose optical glass, crystal and crystal glass;
M-7 – for electrovacuum glass, crystal and crystal glass.
Minium lead brands M-1 – M-6 is available in powder form, brand M-7 – in granular form.
Before use, red lead paint must be thoroughly mixed, if necessary, diluted to a viscosity, convenient for application, with solvent, white spirit or a mixture of solvent with toluene in a 1: 1 ratio.
To clear the painted metal surface from corrosion products, old exfoliated paint and other contaminants, degrease. Lead paint is applied by brush, roller or spray gun in two layers at air temperature from 5 to 35 0 C., while the paint temperature should not be below 15 0 C. After drying, the coating is not harmful to humans.
Before applying the surface must be cleaned from dust and dirt, degreased. Paint lead red lead thoroughly, apply with a brush, roller or paint sprayer. It is allowed to lay minium lead at a temperature of up to minus 5 ° C in the absence of ice. Interlaminar drying time not less than 2 hours.
Solvent No. 646 or white spirit.

The lead minium is fire- and explosion-proof, according to the degree of impact on the body, it belongs to substances of the 1st hazard class.
Red lead lead is packaged in wooden barrels, steel flasks, cardboard-wooded or plywood drums with a liner of laminated bag or waterproof paper, steel drums, wooden and plastic barrels, soft special disposable containers.
Minium lead transported by all modes of transport in covered vehicles. When transporting soft containers in open vehicles, they must be covered with a waterproof material to protect against precipitation.
Minium lead stored in packed form in closed warehouses at ambient temperatures from minus 40 to plus 40 ° C. Tara stacked in piles of a height of not more than 3 m on the lining or wooden pallets.
The warranty period for storage of red lead is 1 year from the date of manufacture.
